In these times, when mass-produced and synthetic-based products rule the world, eco-friendly and handmade products have a certain charm. Not only do they introduce novelty, but they also create a bridge between human beings and nature. Narikela Art is always exploring nature to create something meaningful, elegant, and green. One such item is our handmade coconut shell tortoise – a symbol of longevity, prosperity, and good energy. The artwork is not only a beauty to the eyes, but also a reflection of ancient craftsmanship and sustainability.
How the Idea Was Born
One day, Bhavesh Mathur, the owner of Narikela Art, was looking at a beautiful glass tortoise handcrafted. It was a beautiful piece of art, but it sparked his thoughts – could he do something similar but in a more sustainable and natural way? That was when the idea came to him. Why not create a tortoise out of coconut shells?
The journey was not easy. Coconut shells are not as smooth as glass or ceramic, and they need to be cut and shaped with care. After a few trials, re-designing, and tweaking, the perfect coconut shell tortoise was ready. What began as an experiment turned out to be a beautiful piece of work that not only adds to home decor but also contributes to being eco-friendly.

The Making Process – From Coconut Shells to Tortoise
Making the coconut shell tortoise takes at least three well-selected coconut shells, designed and cut with care. This is how we create this adorable creation at Narikela Art:
Selecting the Shell for the Tortoise’s Back
- The first is to select a well-shaped coconut shell for the back of the tortoise. It must be smooth, round, and well-shaped to fit the tortoise shell.
- The husk is removed, and the shell cleaned and sanded properly to give a smooth finish.
Making the Bottom Half of the Tortoise
- The second coconut shell is cut and shaped with care to create the bottom half of the tortoise. This half needs to be a little flat so that the tortoise can stand properly and balance on any surface.
Making the Head, Legs, and Tail
- The third coconut shell is used to carve out the head, legs, and tail of the tortoise.
- Each of these components is precision-shaped by hand to mimic the natural form of a tortoise.
- Later, they are firmly attached to the body to fit perfectly with the rest of the tortoise.
Polishing and Finishing
- To give it strength and protect it from dampness, a natural wood polish is used.
- The polish gives the rich texture of the coconut shell a stunning finish.

The Religious Significance of Having a Coconut Shell Tortoise at Home
The tortoise is a symbol of good luck in every culture, and when paired with a natural coconut shell, it’s even more spiritually blessed.
Hinduism & the Kurma Avatar
Lord Vishnu’s second avatar, Kurma (the tortoise), assisted in holding up Mount Mandara while churning the ocean (Samudra Manthan) as per Hindu mythology.
A tortoise at home is believed to bring stability, protection, and God’s blessings.
Feng Shui & Vastu Shastra
Feng Shui asserts that having a tortoise at home invites wealth, longevity, and harmony.
Vastu Shastra recommends placing a tortoise near the door or in the north direction to invite prosperity and protection.
Coconut Shell’s Spiritual Value
Coconut is a sacred fruit in Hindu cultures and is used in rituals and offerings.
A coconut shell tortoise unites the good energy of both and is therefore an excellent home décor piece with spiritual value.
